Geek Game Night #1: Risk

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Tonight marked the first Geek Game Night. Dan, Kevin, Matt, and myself all hail from Southeast Texas and went to high school together. We all eventually ended up in Austin, and a board game night just made too much sense to ignore. And thus, it begins.

Session Report: Risk

Risk, is well… Risk. It’s an oldie but a goodie. There are no surprises with this game. It’s a game of global conflict, intimidation, alliances, backstabbing, and all around fun. I played as the black army and proclaimed my army name to be “The Black Death” which it will henceforth be referred to as such.

The game got off to a deadly start as an aggressive Matt nearly wiped himself out. “The Black Death” quickly secured South America and Africa and was warring in North America and Europe. However, I was kind and merciful and allowed Matt to regroup just north of my buildup in Africa. I could only afford to have one front at the time, so making an alliance there seemed like a good idea.

As the game went on, Dan got isolated out in Australia and began to fall behind. Kevin had most of Asia & North America, and Matt was fully revived and had Europe under control while warring to the East. Dan, not having any better thing to do besides wait for his own demise, decided to push west into Kevin’s territory. Dan was quickly destroyed, but Kevin had to focus on it just enough which allowed Matt a good chance to launch a full assault upon Kevin. “The Black Death” watched, continuing to grow in size from its safe haven that was the southern hemisphere.

The battles between Matt and Kevin were huge. At this time, there were at least 400 or 500 armies on the board. We were having to use different color armies for counters as well as a few other things. You know how it goes. During the struggle, “The Black Death” had the undisputed largest force on the board. However, at one point, I had called to an end of conflict in North America with Kevin. Here I was, a man of my word, with an alliance between the only other 2 players left in the game. I let them war on.

Hundreds of dice rolls ensued as the war waged between Matt & Kevin. Kevin had cashed in on his cards he received from defeating Dan, and Matt had several cards to cash in as well. At this point, the reinforcements were staggering numbers. Trading in cards was your life force that kept the war waging. Matt finally got the upper hand and defeated Kevin.

War-torn, Matt’s army was thinned out, but it quickly recovered from the cards he gathered from his hard-earned victory. I would estimate that Matt’s army had somewhere in the numbers of ~200 units and “The Black Death” was probably slightly higher. Rather than initiating conflict and killing millions of innocents across the globe (or maybe it was because we didn’t feel like spending 2 hours on hundreds of dice rolls) world peace was declared!

1st (175 points): Hunter as “The Black Death”
1st (175 points): Matt as red
3rd (50 points): Kevin as green
4th (0 points): Dan as blue

Season 1

Our Geek Game Night has exploded into a massive campaign. Sure, playing board games once a week was fun and all, but it was too damned simple! We needed to be part of something bigger! Winning an individual game is rewarding, sure… but we needing something more to strive for! And so, the Geek Game Night scoring system was established.

It’s actually not all that complicated. If 4 players compete on any given night, then 400 points are at stake. If players tie (which happens often since we sometimes play two games a night) then they split the points of the two spots they should be occupying. Maybe I’ll get into the intricacies of the scoring breakdowns at a later date, but those are the basics. You can see a breakdown of the scoring by clicking on the Score link at the top right of the page.

The first person to 2,500 points wins the season. He is showered with admiration and may enter rooms with his head held high for he knows that he is better than the rest.

Upon the ending of a season, each of the players must put forward $10, even the winner. The winner then takes this money, and purchases the board game of his choice. Said game shall kick off the new season of Geek Game Night.
